Edo2024: Governor from Edo Central........Thinking Right
Looking at the history
of Edo State right from independence it may beat your imagination that two
Senatorial districts have actually dominated the helms of affairs as
Administrator and Governors. The Edo North and Edo South have always been
in charge while the Edo Central have been perpetually left out.
A little dive into the
pre-independence era, we can attest that Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro CON of
blessed memory was one of Nigeria's foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy
activists. He was also very instrumental in the struggle for Nigeria's
independence and he hailed from Uromi. His track record shows that he did
well.
Post-independence, we
also had Prof. Ambrose Alli who ruled in the then Bendel State has his legacy
still speaking volume today. He happens to be the last of those that has come
from Edo Central Senatorial District. However, historically, during
his reign, neither the Edo State nor the Senatorial District systems were in
place but we must take cognizance of his place of origin now located in Edo
Central Senatorial District. Prof Ambrose Alli is still a reference point
today.
Since the creation of
Edo State no person from Edo Central has had the opportunity to be
Governor. The tenure of Prof. Osarhiemen Osunbor was cut short hence his
performance could really not be assessed.
To bring development,
we would be focused on bringing competence into bear if we truly desire
development for Edo State. Chief Enahoro and Prof Alli that have their names in
history earned it from competence which can be verified.
In the current
dispensation elective positions are usually determined by goodwill of political
leaders and majority of votes. Those who tend to be political leaders are
largely determined by the resources (funds) and population they control.
However, the locations with the highest number of voters have been a major
determinant. This has made those who were able to form alliances leverage
easily on this.
A look at the
population distribution of Edo State as per Senatorial districts, we realize
that Edo Central has the least in terms of population. If the population will
continually be used, it means that Edo Central Senatorial District will always
be left out.
By August 27th, 2023
Edo State would be 32years old (since 1991), and the recent democracy is
about 24years old (since 1999); the Edo South and Edo North Senatorial District
has been represented without opportunity given to Edo Central.
Considering the likes
of Ambrose Alli and Anthony Enahoro who did not do badly, there should also be
a conscious effort to see that the next Governor of Edo State comes from Edo
Central. This is a call to all Political Leaders, Political Parties and
well-meaning people of Edo State to join their voices in giving Edo Central a
chance. If there is no conscious effort to do that, the population of the Edo
Central Senatorial District will not be able to do that.
Let us reason this together, if the choice of voting Governors and making impact in the society was solely based on Senatorial District populations, it means that the likes of late Chief Anthony Enahoro would not have been able achieve his feat and Prof. Ambrose Alli would not have been able to become Governor respectively in the State. So, the political space of Edo State should therefore consider focusing directly on the Edo Central Senatorial District in the choice of 2024 Governorship candidate.
In the spirit of
changing this narrative in order not to make it appear to be like
oppressive discrimination, come 2024, there is the need to give someone from Edo
Central a chance. There is no doubt that a very competent hand and brain can be
gotten from that extract to contribute their quota to the development of Edo
State.
We call on all to
think in this direction and support this call for Edo2024: Governor from
Edo Central.

I think this is right and timely. The next governor of Edo state should be a responsible technocrat from Esan Central.
ReplyDelete*Edo Since 1999*
ReplyDeleteEven without going into history, Igbinedion (south) was succeeded by Oshiomhole (North) and Obaseki (South) succeeded Oshiomhole. Fairness demands that Central produces the next governor.
An article that pricks people's consciences on inequality, neglect and injustice that this portends will go a long way
