AAU ALUMNI HOME BRANCH ELECTION 2026: CONCERNED MEMBERS ALLEGE IRREGULARITIES, DEMAND CANCELLATION

EKPOMA, NIGERIA
Concerned members and stakeholders of the Ambrose Alli University Alumni Association, Home Branch, have called for the immediate cancellation of the branch election held on Friday, August 14, 2026, alleging widespread irregularities, intimidation, and subversion of the democratic process.

In a press release made available to the Bricache Intelligence on Sunday, the group accused the outgoing executive and the Electoral Committee, ELECO, of conducting a process that was "fundamentally not free, not fair and not credible."

The stakeholders claim the process was compromised before voting began.

They alleged that the outgoing executive led by Prof. Austin Aghemelo unilaterally appointed ELECO without consensus, despite objections at a February 2026 general meeting. They also cited repeated changes to the election timetable by ELECO Chairman, Mr. Chris Aikhohi, including an abrupt reopening of nominations till August 10, which forced a rushed manifesto on August 13 and election on August 14

Other allegations include the relocation of the venue to the private residence of Mr. Tony Imonitie, an aspirant, and the presentation of a financial report dated December 2025 at an August 2026 end-of-tenure meeting.

According to the release, over 140 financial members were present at the venue but only 49 were accredited to vote based on a "hidden list" allegedly compiled from 2023-2026 attendance records.

The group said this violated the Home Branch Constitution which provides that all financial members are eligible to vote. Named members said to have been excluded include Comr. Austin Onobhayedo and Dr. Paul Itua.

The statement further alleged heavy militarization of the venue with 4 soldiers, 13 police officers, and armed youths. It claimed the NEC Observer, Chairperson of AAUE Auchi Branch, threatened to use security agencies to arrest members who refused directives, and that senior professors, professionals, and women were subjected to harassment and verbal abuse.

The group also cited discrepancies in the figures: about 29 persons were observed voting, accreditation was recorded at 43, while votes cast were announced as 45. For other positions, votes reportedly fluctuated between 20 and 24.

The stakeholders alleged that the official Home Branch WhatsApp group was restricted 48 hours to the election. They said ELECO Chairman declared Mr. Peter Dame winner at 10:13PM on August 14, the declaration was deleted at 10:56PM, and a "corrected" statement was posted at 5:15AM on August 15.

Mr. Peter Dame was also accused of failing to resign his position as Worldwide Secretary-General before contesting

The concerned members are demanding:

1.  Nullification of the August 14, 2026 election

2.  Reconstitution of ELECO to be independent and constitutional

3.  Non-Recognition of anyone emerging from the process by AAU management, security agencies, ISTH, PFFM and the public

4.  A 5-year financial audit of the outgoing EXCO

They have issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Worldwide President, Dr. Clifford Imade Omozeghian Esq, and NEC. Failure to act, they warned, will lead to withdrawal of subscriptions, formation of a parallel Home Branch, creation of independent digital platforms, and legal action.

The group noted that the Home Branch, with over 600 active financial members, serves as the flagship of the alumni association worldwide.

They however commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Eunice Omonzijie, and AAU management for "remaining completely neutral" during the process.

The press release was signed by Comr. Austine Onobhayedo, Comr. Dr. Z.U. Mamudu, Comr. Benedict Oseyomon, Comr. Okhiria Peace Okosun, Comr. Mrs. R. I. Egbon, Comr. Aidenojie Monday, and Dr. Mrs. G.O. Ochie, for Concerned Financial Members & Stakeholders.

Efforts to get reactions from Prof. Austin Aghemelo, Mr. Chris Aikhohi, Mr. Peter Dame, and the Worldwide President as of press time were unsuccessful.

This report is based on a press release issued by concerned members of AAU Alumni Association, Home Branch, dated August 17, 2026.
