Justice for Uwaila our Birthday Message
Myself, Birthday mates and other people with human hearts are pained by the recent death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa who was raped and assaulted before her death. It is really painful considering her humble background, who knows if one of her greatest desire was to take the family out of the condition under which she grew up.
We would dedicate 2020 birthday to talk about some of the ills we suffer in the society that need to urgently addressed them. We know it is God that spares lives but there is the need to curtail the roles of human in either cutting short the lives of people or making it miserable.
There has been many cases of rape and other forms of gender based violence where the custodians of the laws and policies that are supposed to have implemented and used it to serve as deterrent to others but have remained silent. In the face of the various acts perpetuated by many persons and still go freely without being caught up with the hand of the laws. The various bureaucratic bottle neck, extortion, sentiment etc are the multiple factors responsible for this. Even when its said that no one is above the law, people from low social economic class suffer a lot especially at the first port of report.
The typical scenario is that you go to report a case at the police station, your social class and the amount of money you can part with would determine the kind of attention you would get. Right from the Police Station justice is already being denied and if you do not know your right or have people that know your right around you, you would end up chickening out. So you would observe that most gender based violence cases usually do not go beyond the police station despite arrest that would be made and bail is free.
Since most of these perpetrators either groom or survey their victims over time, a certain category of persons are their target usually children staying with their grandmother, step-parents, Orphans, low social class parents, children under care givers. A lot of person also in high social class or living in affluence have also being victims.
We are thinking that one thing that may be giving them confidence is that nothing can be done to them.
There has been this concern if the victims are not aware that there are laws protecting them or they can actually get justice. It has also been seen that the road to justice has been made too long and tortuous that people may resent to fate instead of taking pain to pass through,.
Despite all the effort by the Government both at the State and Federal level to have signed various law as well as the availability of the criminal and penal code, administration of justice remains a challenge.
Just as the case of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa has gone round like a wide fire and arousing the interest of many sympathizers, we want to every concerned person, organization, institution, security, government and all others to change their sympathy to empathy in order for us to be able to put a stop to this menace.
We are trusting on the Nigerian Police Force to do their very best to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to book while justice would be served. We are also believing that this should spark rejuvenated efforts to ensure that cases of rape and defilement are no longer heard or seen in our society,
We would also want to use this medium to call on Ministries, Department, Agencies and Non-State actors to come together to develop and adopt a RESPONSE PLAN that would remove all forms of limiting factors in the response.
People are already asking, will the case of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa not go the way of the others, that went viral and suddenly fizzle out. As we watch event unfold, lets keeping watching to see if the authorities would raise or dash our hope.
For us who are pained for Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa and other cases crying for justice, we would continue to say:
#JusticeforUwailaOmozuwa
#JusticeforUwaila
#JusticeforUwa
#StopAllFormofViolence
#SayNoToRape
