Killers of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa !!!

All eyes and ears are wide open waiting to know who were those behind this condemn-able act.

Why would they rape and assault her?

Was their original intention to kill her?

Why would they be so bold to do it inside the church?

Why has there been some strange comments from unknown people?

Since Uwaila death that has sparked wide spread condemnation and bringing to bare that the rape culture in Nigeria is yet to be curtailed. Within a span of few weeks there has been various cases of rape but they all have one challenge which is JUSTICE. The road to justice has been and is still very challenging. This has made victims to continue to suffer while perpetrators continue to walk about freely.

On the case of late Vera, a suspect has been said to have been arrested while some other persons including the pastor of the church has been taken to Abuja for questioning. However, the Police are yet to give details of their investigations so far. Though there many rumours going around about linking the killer to church but there is no confirmation on this.

Unlike many other cases of rape, this is one that has received a rare comment from the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria on his twitter handle on June 2nd

"I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Uwaila Omozuwa. I expect the Nigeria Police Force to speedily and diligently investigate this case and ensure that all the culprits responsible for this barbaric act are brought to justice. @MBuhari"

This comment alone is enough to spur the Inspector General of Police to put in his very best to ensure that the killers are brought to book; however, the Nigeria Police Force has over time being fingered in making justice for rape victims a challenge. Late Vera's parents have continuously lamented how they were treated at the Oregbeni Police Station where the case was first reported, there has also been calls that what transpired there need to be properly investigated.

Still considering the role of police in handling rape cases, there was also a recent reported case where a rape victim was detained and made to bail herself with the sum of  N10,000.00 (ten thousand naira) and the two suspects were granted bail with the sum of N30,000.00 (thirty thousand naira) each. It took the intervention of some Civil Society and other concerned persons who are following up on the matter now where one of the suspect has jumped bail.

There was a case of a pregnant lady who was found dead in her apartment where she stayed alone; she was met naked, blood and foam coming out of her mouth and semen all over her body. No update on arrest or details of investigation.

There are many cases that the police are expected to close ranks on.

Irrespective of the various misgivings, the Police would still take the lead in the investigation of the killers of Late Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

There has been series of activities to protest the rape of Vera and create awareness in the society to do away with the rape culture. As some persons are still trying to figure out why people are raped if it based on dressing, location etc, it has been widely stated that there is not one justifiable reason why anyone should be raped.

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) joined by Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN and other persons joined in a rally some days ago to protest her death.

The CSOs Coalition on Justice for Uwa has also scheduled a candle light procession for Wednesday 10th, June 2020.

One outstanding thing is that there would be continuous agitation till the Killers of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa are brought to book.

As we continue to wait to know the Killers of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, We continue to say......

Silence is Not Golden: The Need for Accountability and Justice in Nigeria's Justice System for Sex-Related Crimes

Silence is Not Golden: The Need for Accountability and Justice in Nigeria's Justice System for Sex-Related Crimes By Dr. Bright Oniovokukor  In Nigeria's justice system, one area of criminality that has not received fair and objective attention is sex-related offenses. The challenge of providing evidence remains significant, and proving the facts is another obstacle. Despite having various laws in place to address these issues for many years, biases stemming from loud opinions, prejudice, nepotism, religion, and culture continue to hinder progress. This has perpetuated a culture of silence. When a woman who has been sexually harassed decides to speak up, some people, including some who claim to be gender advocates, argue that the timing and circumstances are not ideal. They have used this argument to criticize Senator Natasha, claiming she spoke out at the wrong time and place.  This raises questions:  When is enough enough?  Do offenders consider the time and locati...

SENATOR OLUREMI TINUBU: THE "SWEET MOTHER" NORM IS A TRADITION OF RESPECT AND ADMIRATION .......A WAKE-UP CALL AS STUDENTS' REACTION HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR CHANGE

Senator Oluremi Tinubu's recent visit to a school in Delta State took an unexpected turn, sparking concerns about her role as the First Lady of Nigeria. The drama unfolded when the MC welcomed her with a song, "Na Our Mama be dis" ("This is our mother"), but the students, mostly adult nurses-in-training, responded with "Na Your Mama be dis" ("This is your mother"), implying she was the MC's mother, not theirs.  When the MC mounted the stage, it's usually a norm for some women who are top personalities to be welcomed with a song, "Sweet Mother". This is a sign of respect and admiration for these women. However, some people have expressed the opinion that they can only call someone "Mother" if she is their biological mother or has played a motherly role in their lives. This sentiment was echoed in the unexpected response of the students during Senator Oluremi Tinubu's visit. This unexpected reaction raises questi...

FALSE DIAGNOSIS OF TYPHOID MUST STOP IN NIGERIA!

In Nigeria, if you called in sick and couldn’t make it to work, it was probably because you had Malaria and Typhoid. Did I hear you say Typhoid? You have participated in Fraud! Let me shock you, the rate of Typhoid fever occurrence in Sub-Saharan Africa based on existing studies is less than 1%, unlike malaria prevalence which currently stands above 60% in Nigeria. Yet, typhoid fever, a disease caused by Salmonella typhi and its paratyphi variant is being diagnosed on a daily basis and treated at an unprecedented rate in Nigeria. This situation has gotten so bad that almost every patient; male, female, young and old with febrile illness in Nigeria is treated for typhoid. At every turn, what you hear is: ‘I have just been diagnosed and treated for malaria and typhoid’ or ‘since I treated malaria and its not going I must definitely have typhoid. As a matter of fact, patients who believe they have these twin ailments will abandon doctors who refuse to treat the Typhoid component ...
