EDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY COMPROMISED

EDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY COMPROMISED BY FUNKE OSIBODU:

....passes law on electricity theft but refused to pass same on estimated and outrageous bills.

....Chris Okaeben spearded deal as the house chairman of power.

It was with rude shock and utter disappointment we received the information of Edo State House of Assembly passing a bill into law criminalising electricity theft and the set up of a special court for related offence.

This action of the members representing Edo people have revealed their level of insensitivity towards the plight of Edo people in the face of extortion, estimated billing and darkness that the masses have been subjected to by the inept management of the Benin Electricity Distibution Company since takeover.

While the same house of assembly have not raised a voice against the estimated and outrageous electricity bills citizens are forced to pay whether they are supplied electricity or not, they found it convenient to be compromised by Funke Osibodu through Chris Okaeben to make a law to criminalise electricity theft. Does this mean to the lawmakers that, collecting money for service not rendered not theft?

If Edo State House Assembly cannot make law to criminalise estimated billing and non provision of meters, it therefore follows they have no business to make law for electricity theft.

The Governor of Edo state, the Oba of Benin, traditional rulers and the civil society have at different instances condemn the operations of the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company. The Governor at a time drove out the managemen of the BEDC from his office and the Oba of Benin have equally ask President Mohammadu Buhari not to renew the operational licence of the power company. The same BEDC took the civil society, youth groups and communities to court with the intention of obtaining perpetual injunction to stop them from protesting against their poor services.

Edo Civil Society Organisations is fully ready to mobilize the people against this insensitive and compromised legislature.

We are calling on the leadership and members of the state house of assembly to drop that bill now until all customers are metered and estimated billing is eradicated. Chris Okaeben who is the house committee chairman on power has never spoken against the operations of the BEDC against citizens. It should be recalled, he was at a time faced with monetary scandal involving the BEDC.

We call on Governor Godwin Obaseki not to assent to that piece of uninformed and financially induced bill when it comes to his table. He must stand and protect the interest of the people over that of a few persons. Until BEDC makes meter available to all their customers and end estimated billing, we shall resist any law that will criminalise electricity theft in Edo state. The issuance of estimated or outrageous bills is theft itself, so therefore, what is good for the goose is equally good for the gander.

EDO PEOPLE WILL RESIST THIS.

Silence is Not Golden: The Need for Accountability and Justice in Nigeria's Justice System for Sex-Related Crimes

Silence is Not Golden: The Need for Accountability and Justice in Nigeria's Justice System for Sex-Related Crimes By Dr. Bright Oniovokukor  In Nigeria's justice system, one area of criminality that has not received fair and objective attention is sex-related offenses. The challenge of providing evidence remains significant, and proving the facts is another obstacle. Despite having various laws in place to address these issues for many years, biases stemming from loud opinions, prejudice, nepotism, religion, and culture continue to hinder progress. This has perpetuated a culture of silence. When a woman who has been sexually harassed decides to speak up, some people, including some who claim to be gender advocates, argue that the timing and circumstances are not ideal. They have used this argument to criticize Senator Natasha, claiming she spoke out at the wrong time and place.  This raises questions:  When is enough enough?  Do offenders consider the time and locati...

SENATOR OLUREMI TINUBU: THE "SWEET MOTHER" NORM IS A TRADITION OF RESPECT AND ADMIRATION .......A WAKE-UP CALL AS STUDENTS' REACTION HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR CHANGE

Senator Oluremi Tinubu's recent visit to a school in Delta State took an unexpected turn, sparking concerns about her role as the First Lady of Nigeria. The drama unfolded when the MC welcomed her with a song, "Na Our Mama be dis" ("This is our mother"), but the students, mostly adult nurses-in-training, responded with "Na Your Mama be dis" ("This is your mother"), implying she was the MC's mother, not theirs.  When the MC mounted the stage, it's usually a norm for some women who are top personalities to be welcomed with a song, "Sweet Mother". This is a sign of respect and admiration for these women. However, some people have expressed the opinion that they can only call someone "Mother" if she is their biological mother or has played a motherly role in their lives. This sentiment was echoed in the unexpected response of the students during Senator Oluremi Tinubu's visit. This unexpected reaction raises questi...

TRUE STORY: AUNTY PRISCILLA, PLEASE SHOW ME THE WAY!!

A true life narrative. In the past decade, several people especially acquaintances and younger colleagues have requested of me to ‘Show Them The Way’. Sadly, very few of these persons are willing to undergo the entire process of the “Way” they desire. They focus on the glitz and glamour associated with my work and refuse to acknowledge or associate with its inherent struggles, processes as well as its risks and challenges. I began BraveHeart Initiative (BH) at age 18 (Year 2002) as a teenage girl in a rural community. BHI was then known as Voice of the Zionites and operated as a youth led, youth focused, faith based youth development club. We only programmed during the main holidays as our target population were secondary school students and we needed an ample opportunity to reach them in large numbers. Our activities were executive during the Easter Holidays (April), Long Holidays (August) and Christmas Holidays (December). I had my first seminar on the 26th of December 2002...
