Brutally Raped & Assaulted: Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa Died 3 Days Later

Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 23 year old leveler Student was brutally raped and assaulted inside a Redeemed Christian Church in Ikpoba-Hill Area in Benin City, Edo State. The perpetrators of this act are yet to be identified. Available information has it that Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, usually referred to as Uwa has been going the Church to read since the COVID-19 lock-down has affected school. She usually goes there to read in the morning hours and return in the evenings. On 27 th May, 2020, she went there to read as usual only for the family to be called later in the evening by the Assistant Pastor of the Church that Uwa was in a terrible condition. The Assistant Pastor was said to have been alerted by the Security man who usually come around in the evenings. I recovered from COVID-19 after 21 days without infecting anybody, says Edo Speaker

Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Rt. Hon. Frank Okiye, has revealed that he recovered from coronavirus (COVID-19) after 21 days in isolation without infecting anyone with the deadly virus. Okiye, while speaking to journalist in Benin City, said all he did to prevent infesting his aides, family and friends with the disease was strict adherence to government guidelines, especially those on social distancing, compulsory use of facemasks, among others. The speaker, who is the index COVID-19 case in Edo, is among the ten patients who have fully recovered and discharged after testing negative twice for the virus and treated with support from the state government. Some of the survivors were treated at the state’s isolation centres. Okiye also urged residents to complement the state government’s efforts at checking the spread of the virus by making themselves available for the ongoing screening and testing in various centres across the state. HIV/AIDS: CiSHAN urges Federal Government of Nigeria, States to procure self-testing kits for citizens

The Civil Society for HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (CiSHAN) has called on government in all the three tiers to procure self-testing kits to help increase testing for the virus in the country. Besides, the group also urged the government to, as a matter of urgency, disseminate the HIV self- testing guidelines. These, the group argued in a statement, would help bridge the HIV testing gap and ensuring that the country achieve ninety (90%) percent testing target for 2030. The statement which was signed by the group Executive Secretary, Dr. Walter Ugwuocha also noted availability of the self-testing kits will further provide access to people who don’t feel comfortable going to health facilities for testing. He said: “Availability of HIV self-test kit in Nigeria is a welcome development as it will facilitate access of persons. HIV Stigma Case Report: Public label of a Female Sex Worker (FSW) to be HIV Positive Issue: While two FSWs were quarreling in their brothel and exchanging words, Lady A emphatically  said that Lady B was HIV Positive and should pray that God would deliver her from it. She kept on repeating it to the hearing of all, including their clients. After the quarrel, Lady B  noticed that clients started avoiding her based on the label and she felt really bad. Efforts to make Lady A  refute her words proved abortive despite intervention by all at the brothel including the Manager. Action : Lady B reported to some CSOs working on HIV who intervened in the matter. Investigation revealed Lady B was HIV Negative, that Lady A spoke out of anger.
